Repeat after me: Hue-guh. This is the correct way to pronounce the trending Danish word — Hygge, which represents more of a feeling than a physical thing.
Hygge is the warm, cozy feeling you get when you are with those who matter most. It is the smell of delicious food and the sound of the fire crackling as you read a great book. There’s no way to buy hygge because it’s not for sale. It must be created by a sense of slowness, an appreciation for time and a mindfulness for the moment at hand.
Below are 5 ways you can “get more hygge in your life-” enjoy!
1. Candles
We are surrounded by bright, artificial light all day. Don’t wait for a special moment to bring out the candles and have a candle-lit dinner on a regular Monday or Tuesday night. Try filling a mason jar with coffee beans and placing a vanilla candle inside to bring a cafe-like aroma into your humble abode.
2. Bring outdoor elements indoors.
For many of us, camping and enjoying the outdoors is not something we can do every evening. That said, bring the outdoors to you! Light a fire at the fireplace and fill your home with indoor plants that will bring more life into your space.
Here are a few plants that are made for indoor conditions and live year round with minimal maintenance:
Succulents
Geranium
Ponytail Palm
Pothos
Dracaena
3. Friends and family.
Hygge thrives on great company and deep conversation. Invite friends and family over for a hygge inspired evening of longs talks, good food, comfy clothes and relaxing music.
4. Comfy pillows and blankets
Keep extra blankets and pillows close by in your living room and even in your kitchen. This will create a cozy vibe and make your guests feel like they are in a home away from home.
5. Detach from your phone
This might be the hardest but most important “way to hygge.” Place your phone out of sight while spending quality time with friends and family. Nothing is worse than having great conversation, with great food and great company with a guest who is face-down in their phone.
